Overview

The Malahat area sits on the west side of the Saanich Inlet, over the Malahat from Langford. It includes Mill Bay, Shawnigan Lake, Cobble Hill and the Malahat itself. Life here is rural and relaxed, with lakes, forests, farms and ocean views.

Most people who live here commute into Victoria along the Malahat Drive, which takes about 45 minutes from Mill Bay outside rush hour. In return, you get more land and more space for your budget than in the core.

Areas around the Malahat

Mill Bay. The main hub, with shopping, schools and the ferry across the inlet to Brentwood Bay. A mix of family neighbourhoods and ocean view homes.

Shawnigan Lake. A lake community with a village, beaches and the famous Kinsol Trestle nearby. Lakefront and lake view homes are a big draw.

Cobble Hill. Farmland, wineries and cideries, with acreages and a small village centre.

The Malahat. Homes along and near the Malahat Drive, many on larger forested lots, close to Spectacle Lake and the SkyWalk.

Homes

Most homes here are single family houses, often on larger lots. You’ll also find acreages and hobby farms in Cobble Hill, lakefront homes on Shawnigan Lake, ocean view homes in Mill Bay, and some newer neighbourhoods and townhomes.

Parks and outdoors

Shawnigan Lake is the heart of summer, with swimming, paddling and boating. Spectacle Lake Provincial Park and Bamberton Provincial Park are close by, and the Cowichan Valley Trail crosses the Kinsol Trestle. Goldstream Provincial Park is just to the south, on the way into town.
